Abstract
The sheet metal industry is continually challenged to enhance production efficiency while adhering to stringent quality standards. Traditional sheet-handling methods, reliant on manual operations, often result in inefficiencies, high labor costs, prolonged cycle times, and frequent human errors-rendering them insufficient to meet contemporary manufacturing demands. In response, robotic automation has emerged as a transformative solution, offering precision, consistency, and increased throughput. This project presents the design and development of an innovative two-sided vacuum cup end-of-arm tooling (EOAT) solution integrated with a FANUC industrial robot, specifically tailored for the automated handling of aluminum sheets in a production environment. The developed EOAT system addresses critical efficiency bottlenecks by enabling simultaneous flipping and accurate placement of metal sheets, substantially reducing cycle times and manual intervention. A significant aspect of this work is its foundation as a Mechatronics Graduate Project (MGP) within the Department of Applied Computing at Michigan Technological University. The MGP framework provides students with a unique experiential learning opportunity that mirrors real-world engineering challenges. Through this project, students engaged in the complete engineering design cycle-including problem definition, concept development, CAD modeling, prototyping, simulation, integration with industrial robotic systems, and testing. Students gained hands-on experience with advanced tools such as robotic simulation software and industrial-grade robotics hardware, while also developing essential skills in teamwork, project management, and technical communication. This project also serves as a robust platform for fostering collaboration between academia and industry. By working closely with industry partners, students are exposed to real-world manufacturing problems and constraints, ensuring that the solutions they develop are both practically viable and immediately applicable in industrial settings. At the same time, industry benefits from innovative, research-driven solutions and access to a pipeline of highly trained, job-ready graduates equipped with the skills necessary to thrive in advanced manufacturing environments. Preliminary results demonstrate substantial improvements in both operational speed and handling precision, directly contributing to increased productivity and greater flexibility in manufacturing workflows. Furthermore, the proposed robotic handling solution delivers economic advantages, including reduced operational costs, minimized downtime, and enhanced process sustainability. Beyond its technical contributions, this project exemplifies the critical role of hands-on, project-based learning in preparing the next generation of engineers for the evolving demands of Industry 4.0. By working on this MGP project, students not only contributed to an innovative manufacturing solution but also developed the skills, confidence, and industry readiness necessary for successful careers in robotics and automation.
