Abstract
Magnetic quadrupole lifetimes of np5(n+1)s J = 2 states of rare gases were discussed. Relativistic configuration-interaction calculations yielded lifetimes of 19.8, 32.2, 35.0, 48.2 and 84.9 s for Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, and Rn. An accurate description of the p5d basis function was found to be essential.
