Abstract
As our population ages, older air passengers face many challenges as they travel. Today there are over 40 million Americans over 65 years and projections are that this number will more than double by 2050 to almost 90 million. This paper defines what is old, examines the characteristics and demographics of older air passengers, describes what it is like to be old, explores the challenges that older passengers face in today's airports, and then discusses the approaches and opportunities as we plan and design future airports. © 2011 ASCE.
