Abstract
The domain structure exhibited by three distinct complex fluids under simple shear flow was discussed. The critical role of domain elasticity was assessed via an effective Weissenberg number. A physical mechanism for the formation of the pervasive patterns was proposed. The results indicate that any system with weak periodicity and weak elongation along two sets of perpendicular axes will exhibit the same pattern.
