Abstract
The NSF ExLENT project is designed to strategically expand experiential learning in Mechatronics while addressing the growing demand for a highly skilled and inclusive STEM workforce. This initiative responds to both regional and national industry needs by equipping participants with advanced competencies in robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), and cybersecurity - fields that are essential to the development of modern industrial automation systems. Despite rising demand, there remain limited opportunities for practical workforce development programs, particularly for populations that are traditionally underrepresented in technical domains. To close this gap, the project introduces a three-component structure that includes the Mechatronics Education Portal (MEP), intensive Mechatronics Practice (MP) experiences hosted at Michigan Technological University, and Mechatronics Pathways Rotations (MIPR) embedded within industry. These elements provide participants with immersive training across robotics, mechanical systems, electronics and controls, cybersecurity, and AI. Partnerships with educational institutions, nonprofit organizations, and regional industry ensure alignment with both academic and industrial needs. Progress is measured through a comprehensive evaluation framework that captures training effectiveness, inclusive outcomes, and workforce readiness. This paper reviews results from the first two years of implementation, highlighting gains in knowledge, student engagement, and industry partnerships, while also identifying ongoing challenges and areas for improvement. The ExLENT program ultimately aims to reduce the skills gap in Mechatronics education and prepare a workforce capable of driving technological innovation in industrial automation.
