Abstract
The growing use of digital technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) in construction research has increased the demand for reliable, accessible, and reusable research data. Construction projects generate diverse datasets across different activities, organizations, and information systems, yet managing and sharing these resources for broader research use remains challenging. The 2026 NSF Workshop on Research Data Management in Construction Engineering: Challenges and Opportunities was organized to examine these needs and promote collaboration between construction research, open science, and cyberinfrastructure communities.
The workshop focused on four objectives: (1) identifying technical and social challenges associated with managing and reusing construction research data; (2) examining research data management practices, FAIR principles [ 4], and ethical considerations; (3) exploring approaches to data security, trusted sharing, and lifecycle management; and (4) identifying opportunities for collaboration among academic researchers, industry partners, government agencies, and cyberinfrastructure communities.
