Abstract
This paper presents a low profile, wideband, highgain antenna based on a wide-slot bowtie antenna and a metasurface. The antenna comprises a wide-slot bowtie radiator fed by a coplanar waveguide (CPW) on the bottom side of the substrate, while a 3 ° 3 periodic metasurface of square patches enclosed by L-shaped open metallic strips is placed on the top side. The metasurface introduces additional resonances, enhancing impedance bandwidth and refining radiation characteristics. The overall dimensions of the proposed antenna are 33.5 × 33.5 × 3.048 mm3, which corresponds to 0.91 × 0.91 × 0.08 ?0 at the center frequency. With only a single substrate, a low profile of 0.084 ?0 is achieved. The proposed antenna operates over a wide frequency range of 5.36 GHz to 11.25 GHz, achieving an impedance bandwidth of 71.6%, a peak gain of 7.5 dB, a 3 dB gain bandwidth of 59%, and a radiation efficiency exceeding 90%. Covering the C-band and portions of the X-band, this design is suitable for wireless communication systems, radar systems, and satellite communication, where low profile, high gain, and wideband performance are crucial.
