Abstract

We describe an experimental design with the aim of assessing the effect of inclement winter weather on the range performance of automotive lidars. Falling snow and ice particles suspended in the air can cause clutter noise concentrated near the lidar sensor. It is clear that these conditions can reduce the probability of detection of important objects via lidar. To our knowledge, there have been no attempts to quantify this performance degradation. With DIN 91471 as a starting point, we aim to design an experiment or series of experiments that will allow such a quantification. As a first step we report here on the repeatability of a range test involving calibrated Lambertian targets.
