Magnetic domain observations in FeGa alloys using multiple techniques

Abstract

Magnetic domain phenomena in magnetostrictive Fe-Ga alloys are not yet fully understood. In this paper, we report observations of magnetic domains in Fe-Ga alloys using multiple complementary experimental techniques to resolve an existing scientific controversy regarding the peculiar cellular magnetic domain structure with zigzag boundaries. First, cellular magnetic domains with zigzag boundaries are observed on the (001) surface of a single-crystal bulk specimen using the Bitter method. Next, the magnetization directions of these cellular domains are determined by magneto-optic Kerr microscopy. Finally, a free-standing thin foil specimen is fabricated from the same surface area to examine the details of magnetic domain boundaries and magnetization distributions using Lorentz microscopy and electron holography. The results reveal the true structure of the cellular domains and provide comprehensive insights into magnetic domains and domain walls in Fe-Ga alloys, with broader implications for other iron-like magnetic materials.
