Abstract

This Undergraduate Education, Research-toPractice, Work-In-Progress Paper describes the methodological implications of two user experience studies in first-year engineering students. The User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ) is a standardized instrument designed to measure the user experience of interactive products such as software, websites, and applications. It captures subjective user perceptions in a structured way, providing insights into how users feel about a product's usability, aesthetics, and overall experience. For instance, if first-year engineering students are using an intelligent tutoring system for programming, the UEQ can be employed to assess how they perceive the system's usability, efficiency, and stimulation factors. Two UEQs were administered in two sections of a first-year, computer programming for engineers course using the linear scale and the pulldown function in Google Forms. Two cohorts of size n=31 and n=30 experienced both the activity centric pedagogy and WebTA during the Spring 2025 semester at the R2 University. The UEQ was administered via Google Forms as a pulldown menu to assess the activity centric pedagogy and as a linear scale to assess WebTA. This work challenges conventional UEQ administration practices. This would improve experience assessments in multiple domains.
