Abstract
Additive manufacturing increasingly becoming relevant in medicine. Increasing computing power and the availability of advanced software in the field of image integration and segmentation have revolutionized the understanding of human anatomy and organ systems in an unprecedented way. Images from different modalities have been imported to a common platform without losing image resolution enabling additive manufacturing to a higher standard. This has further evolved even into device development and implantable organs for the management of various ailments. The areas of major impact are: planning for complex interventions, simulation in medical education, tissue engineering, and drug delivery as well as interventional planning. This is one of the fast-advancing fields in the medical application of additive manufacturing. Cosmetic and plastic surgical interventions including breast implants, maxillofacial implants, dentistry, orthopedic implants, neurosurgical implants, and cardiac surgery have been increasingly using additive manufacturing in recent years.
