Abstract
This paper focuses primarily on the mechanics of rail seat abrasion with an emphasis on cold regions due to the severity of the issues in those climates. The investigation includes a synthesis of the best practices used to mitigate this type of failure. Also included is an exploration of alternative materials with good abrasion resistance for use in the rail seat region. The objective of this research is to evaluate materials and/or methods to eliminate the problem of railseat abrasion. Copyright ASCE 2009.
