Abstract
A linearization of the partial differential equation describing surface limited grain growth has been used to examine the proposed spasmodic migration mechanism of Mullins. Stable periodic solutions are found exhibiting spatial oscillations which correspond with experimental observations of surface groove spacings. The model also predicts the general features expected from the grain boundary 'pull out' process described by Mullins.
