Abstract
A new model is proposed to explain (001) cleavage for b.c.c. metals. The model is based on the concept of minimum stress relief. Hypothetical cleavage planes and directions were evaluated to test the model. The model predicts that b.c.c. metals will cleave on the (001) plane because of a minimum of plastic deformation despite a lower apparent surface energy for (110) planes.
