Abstract
This chapter discusses the various internal combustion engine operating cycles, including the standard two- and four-stroke cycle, along with alternative cycles such as overexpanded and split-cycle engines. Additionally, real engine operating strategies are reviewed including spark ignition and compression ignition engines. The cycle performances are compared and limitations discussed. The chapter concludes with a discussion on future trends for internal combustion engine operating cycles.
