Abstract

Tissue adhesives can overcome limitations associated with mechanical fixation devices, such as sutures and staples. However, current commercially tissue adhesives have limited functions and applications. Multifunctional adhesives are designed to provide added functionality such as antimicrobial property, self-healing ability, and the ability to conform to the non-flat contour of a tissue surface. Additionally, smart adhesives are engineered to be responsive to changes in the environment to release encapsulated therapeutic drug or debond from the surface. These added functions will potentially enhance the utility of these adhesives and broaden their clinical applications.
