Abstract
This project report is an exploration of “Bizaan Bagijige,” a chapbook of poetry and personal poetics centered on contemporary Anishinaabekwe identity. The report explores four select poems from the chapbook through the themes of Ojibwemowin reclamation, resistance of colonial rupture, and Anishinaabe relational teachings, like the Seven Grandfathers, Seven Generations, and mino-bimaadiziwin. These poems are analyzed through epistolary style essays. Each essay addresses the chapbook’s various audiences: all living relations, ancestors, the author, and descendants. The project report relies on language and poetry to assert personal and broader Indigenous sovereignty. This report finds reclamation and sovereignty to be at its most powerful when uplifted by adaptability, vulnerability, and, drawn from Billy-Ray Belcourt, stillness.
