Abstract
The effect of Zr and Cr on the properties of 6111 Al alloy produced by rapid solidification processing (RSP) was studied. The strength of the Zr containing alloy is increased to a significant amount as compared to only Cr containing alloy. Higher yield strength is obtained when the alloy is aged at higher temperature even though the tensile strength level is similar for lower temperature and higher temperature aging. The results conclude that the yield and tensile strengths of 6111 Al alloy can be enhanced to a significant amount by modifying the alloy with a small amount of Zr and controlling a suitable heat treatment.
