Abstract
The Snyder measure of solvent eluting strength (ε0) in adsorption chromatography correlates well with the molecular dipolarity polarizability (π*), hydrogen bond acidity (α), and hydrogen bond basicity (β) solvatochromic parameters. In addition, the δ correction term to π* is a minor influence but statistically significant. There is also a good correlation with a combination of the donor number and acceptor number parameters. These correlations indicate that both acidic and basic sites on the alumina interact with the eluting solvent.
