Abstract
The sensitive clay from the Outardes 2 hydroelectric project is characterized and studied with respect to the effect of chemical changes on the development of the remoulded strength of the soil. The characterization study has identified both the composition and proportion of the components of the amorphous material. In addition, the salt concentration in the pore fluid has been determined in relation to the critical salt concentration. In view of the various soil constituents, the nature of interparticle action is examined with respect to development of remoulded soil strength in the face of chemical and pH changes, and selective removal of various components of amorphous material - to provide an insight into soil performance for land management.
