Abstract
The differential characteristics of the iron shale and iron sandstone of Ikpere jere hematic deposit in Nigeria was found by using SEM, XRD and ICP. Both iron shale and iron sandstone mainly consist of Fe2O3, SiO2 and Al2O3. Iron shale contains higher FeO3, and less SiO2 and Al2O3 than iron sandstone, which provided iron shale with more hematite. The trace elements of the iron ores are Mil, Mg, Ti, Ca, Na, K, and P. The mineral compositions of both iron shale and iron sandstone are hematite and quartz, while iron shale contains kaolinite, which resulted in the layer structure of the shale. SEM showed the microstructures and relationships of the various mineral grains, as well as the elemental distributions in the grains.
