Abstract

© 2018 Liverpool University Press. All rights reserved. In this article I propose to read in Roberto Arlt's El juguete rabioso (1926) a reaffirmation of the individual who recognizes himself as an actor in his own life, an owner of his desires formed at the limits of the social norm. Arlt displaces and departs from the bourgeois notion of the individual (by means of a betrayal mechanism, a theme of the novel) to unveil an individual who does not give up on his desires. His insistence on expressing his desires makes possible a 'disagreement' with -as expressed by Rancière-the configuration whereby parties and parts or the lack of them are defined in any given community. Ultimately, in this article I claim that Arlt's novella re-politicizes literature in the Rio de la Plata region.
