Abstract
This chapter discusses the various internal combustion engine operating cycles, including the standard two and four-stroke cycle, along with alternative cycles such as over-expanded and split-cycle engines. additionally, real engine operating strategies are reviewed including spark-ignition and compression-ignition engines. The cycle performances are compared and limitations are addressed. The chapter concludes with a discussion on future trends for internal combustion engine operating cycles. © 2014 Woodhead Publishing Limited All rights reserved.
