Abstract

This chapter discusses the various internal combustion engine operating cycles, including the standard two and four-stroke cycle, along with alternative cycles such as over-expanded and split-cycle engines. additionally, real engine operating strategies are reviewed including spark-ignition and compression-ignition engines. The cycle performances are compared and limitations are addressed.
