Abstract
Instead of separate analyses of the polymeric flow in the solid conveying, melting and melt flow regions of a screw extruder, a simultaneous finite element simultation of the flow in the three zones of an extruder is presented. The flow in the helical channel of a screw extruder is approximated by a flow between two parallel plates. The effect of various processing variables, design parameters and material properties on the flow rate and the length of channel required for melting the polymer is analyzed.
