Abstract
The article examines how a firm's internal resource strength affects its ability to leverage externally sourced cluster and network resources. The impact of volume and quality of technological resources that are accessible through cluster and network on a firm's ability to generate innovations is explored. A conceptual logic is developed to explain how a focal firm's search and competitive behaviors are likely to be different with respect to cluster and network. It is also suggested that connections with technologically strong partners assist the focal firm in successfully pursuing breakthrough innovations.
