“First-generation student” is federally defined as a student with neither parent having completed a bachelor’s degree. Students who are the first in their family to go to college should be proud to be breaking down educational barriers, but they often must face the world of higher education without the necessary support. Students who are raised by Bachelors+ educated parents tend to be more socially prepared for the environment and rigors of college without evening knowing it. It is as simple as hearing stories of their parents’ college days, visiting the family’s alma mater, and the expectation they will follow suit in attending college. On the contrary, first-generation students do not grow up hearing the “language of college” in their houses, may not visit a college campus until they are in late high school, if at all. Simple things like knowing what a Dean of Students does, or who to go to with their questions cannot be assumed knowledge. Additionally, first- generation students are more likely to lose focus on their schoolwork because they are concerned about their home life, finances, their long-term plan.As educators, how do we best support First-Generation students? This session will provide easy ways to support first- generation students and resources.
