Abstract
The results of the current survey indicate a decrease in the number of U.S.-authored publications in the premier U.S. metallurgical journals in the past 10 years. Because of journal proliferation, this decline does not necessarily indicate a reduction in U.S.-authored papers over this same time period. Over this same period, the relative reduction in papers originating from work performed in industrial laboratories exceeds by far the corresponding reduction in the total number of papers published. I have noted some personal observations and concerns with respect to this last observation. © 1982, The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society. All rights reserved.
